IRISH HISTORICAL STUDIES
2005 PROGRAMME
The Irish Historical
Society has announced its programme for
2005. Following the publication of the New
History of Ireland vol.1 in early 2005 which
will bring to completion one of the most
significant scholarly enterprises undertaken
by Irish history specialists in the twentieth
century, the IHS will mark this achievement,
by taking the New History of Ireland as
the theme of its seven sessions for the
forthcoming year. Each session will focus
on a specific volume in the collection.
The aim is to provide a forum for scholars
to reflect on the impact of this seminal
publication on Irish historical endeavour
in the past and today.
In order to
encourage as many historians as possible
to engage in this process of assessment,
a panel of specialists, comprising a chairperson,
two discussants and a respondent, will lead
the discussion in each of the seven sessions.
At the outset of each meeting, two discussants
will speak for twenty-five minutes each,
outlining their views on the significance
of the specific volume of the New History.
The respondent
will then speak for fifteenth minutes and
the discussion will then be opened up to
those in attendance. Details of the times,
locations, venues, and participants in each
of the seven sessions are provided in the
attached programme.
