PRELIMINARY
NOTICE OF 8TH ANNUAL MEDIEVAL DUBLIN SYMPOSIUM
The 8th Annual Medieval
Dublin Symposium will take place on Saturday
13 May in Trinity College Dublin (Robert
Emmet Lecture Theatre, Arts Building), 9.30am-5.00pm.
The programme will contain
papers on important archaeological topics
such as the recent discovery of Viking burials
at a major excavation at Golden Lane near
St Patrick's Cathedral, directed by Edmund
O'Donovan, and the results of a survey by
Nessa Walsh of the pre-Romanesque churches
of County Dublin.
A little-known manuscript
in TCD contains an important chronicle surviving
from medieval Dublin, and its 'rediscovery'
will be presented in a landmark paper by
Raymond Gillespie, entitled "Dublin's
image of itself: the city chronicle".
This will be accompanied by Alan Fletcher's
study of "Dublin in the medieval Anglo-Irish
and Latin chronicles", and Bernadette
Cunningham's assessment of "Dublin
in the medieval Irish annals".
Admission free. Everyone
welcome. Further information from sduffy@tcd.ie.
